The caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil — made with simple, locally-available ingredients, it packs a strong punch while being surprisingly refreshing!
There are only three ingredients: cachaça (an alcohol similar to rum that is made from distilled sugar cane), limes and sugar. The Bachelor Palace ® boys made us some really delicious ones when we visited Rio:
The caipi’s simplicity makes it very flexible: it can be made with other liquors (+ vodka makes the drink caipivodka), and fruits (we had a delicious caipi made of pineapple while traveling).
Makes one large drink
- 1 lime, rinsed
- 1-2 tablespoons sugar, depending on taste
- Ice cubes
- Cut lime in to quarters crosswise, and then slice each quarter into small pieces. Place in jar or glass.
- Pour sugar on top of limes, and muddle together until limes are mixed with the sugar and sugar is dissolved.
- Fill glass with ice (crushed or small cubes are preferable), and cover with cachaça, shake, and serve.
